Knife Skills and Prep for MasterChef Starts Tueday

On Tuesday, we will learn knife skills- the last section of our Food Studies Unit before our MasterChef Competition on May 15th.

This Youtube clip will be one of the stations in preparing you to practice knife skills with Ms. House and Ms. Holms.

By the end of the morning, we'll have a delicious vegetable salad with perfectly cut vegetables to share.

This is all part of Applied Skills, Design and Technology (ASDT) and Health Education. There will be more budgeting and measuring in various units which will tie in to our Math units on data and measurement.

Fresh Ideas to Include More Nutrition in Common Meals

It was a real treat to have Amelia's mom, Vanessa, spend the morning with us! She helped us learn how to turn simple pasta dishes into healthy super foods. We made zuchini pasta, spaghetti out of squash, fresh nut-free pesto, fresh tomato sauce, and soba noodle salad with a zesty orange-miso dressing.

Students had opportunities to chop, dice, stir and slice their way to a delicious mid-morning meal.

Students, I hope you'll try these healthy dishes at home.

We are almost ready for Masterchef!
Thank you Vanessa.

Dutch Pannekoeks- Delicious!

What a pleasure to welcome Tanya, Morgan's mom, to our school kitchen last week to talk about Dutch cooking and teach us how to use the gas stove to make our own! We topped them with Gouda, bacon, maple syrup, and icing sugar to name a few. We practiced our flipping techniques too!

Chinese Culture and Cooking

Newton's Laws of Force and Motion Test is postponed to Thursday, April 13th

Due to the many exciting cooking demos we have this week, I am postponing the Newton's Laws test until Thursday, April 13th.

Please study the following:
This video on balanced and unbalanced forces:
https://www.khanacademy.org/science/physics/forces-newtons-laws/balanced-unbalanced-forces/v/balanced-and-unbalanced-forces
Can you identify which images show balanced and unbalanced forces?

Vocabulary:
force
motion
net force- the winning force
unbalanced forces
balanced forces
velocity
mass
newtons as a form of measurement

Concepts:
types of forces; gravity, friction, pushing, pulling
How our STEM catapults and Newton's Cradles labs explain specific Newton's laws

Sample Questions:
  •  What is the difference between motion caused by balanced forces and motion caused by unbalanced forces?
  • How are balanced and unbalanced forces evident in your life and activities?
  • Define Newton’s three laws of motion. Give an example of each law.

Amazing Hands-on Learning about Vietnamese Cooking Today!

Thanks to Gavin's mom Lynn, we had a really fun morning learning all about Vietnamese cuisine. The big question was: Do you live to eat or Do you eat to live?

We learned about tropical fruits, the importance of farmers, and gained a renewed appreciation for how hard it is to grow food and get it from the farm to the table.
Thank you Lynn for volunteering to come in to do this food lesson with us today.

Lynn made her own dipping sauce and told us all about rice paper: how it is made and what it can be used for once you dip it in water.
Salak, or snake fruit: delicious and full of iron.
Herbs like basil and mint are prevalent and aid in digestion. We tasted jicama too- so juicy!

Newton's Laws: Test next Wednesday, April 12th.

We began reviewing for our Science test on Newton's Laws that will take place next Wednesday.

You can continue to review by viewing this video on forces:
